In my thesis, I place documentaries and mockumentaries side by side, according to their principles, peculiarities, and historicity through research and analysis. Relying on their relationships and differences, building on the work of acknowledged professionals and providing examples, I express my views on the diverse typology of these genre families. The conclusion of the dissertation is an appellation of an existing, but as yet undefined genre, located somewhere in the sphere between the documentaries and the mockumentaries. To prove the existence of this genre, I rely on the work of Sacha Baron Cohen, whose movies, television shows, and series are marked as mockumentaries by the public and the profession in general. In the thesis, I ask how appropriate this classification is, because the humor factor in the works of this actor/writer/producer is based on situation comedies, which does not have all lines written in advance following the rules of fiction films, but achieves the desired effect with documentary tools. I call this mixed genre as “half-documentaries” and I prove its right to exist through some of Cohen’s works, including his movie “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”.
