Moving beyond historical notions of artificial intelligence with the help of new media art
The marvel of artificial intelligence has captivated the minds of creators for millennia. Many of the imagined examples of past AI’s resonate with their current and future applications. However, most of these uses revolve around AI’s being tools and solutions for specific problems rather than entities of their own right, owing to the goal-oriented nature of both science and technology. Through combining the cutting edge of science and technology with artistic freedom, new media artists and artistic researchers can move beyond some of the outdated topoi, setting artificial intelligence free in their art in anticipation of a future with synthetic life on an equal footing with biological life.

Thread of Life
Thread of Life is a three piece installation, representing the three Greek goddesses of fate, the Moiræ exercising their power over a simple artificial intelligence, a cellular automaton. The synthetic life is calculated at Clotho, who spins the thread of life. At this stage, the participant can influence the outcome of the simulation by inducing randomness. The second stage is where Lachesis measures the thread of life, and the organic patterns produced by the simulation become visible as holes punched on a tape. The third, and final stage is where Atropos, who cuts the thread of life also cuts the punched tape at predetermined locations, after which the individual snippets land at the base of the installation, contributing to an ever growing pile of past synthetic life.
