Housing estate in a different way
My interest is in the communities living in the prefabricated houses and flats built in housing estates after 1965, in addition to the residence architecture itself, its impact on living conditions and quality of life. My hypothesis is that housing estates built in the spirit of modernism and constructivism have transformed into a nostalgic, lovable “world” today, despite many shortcomings and poorly designed spaces. I have never lived in a housing estate but there has been an attraction to them for years which is why I chose the representation of buildings, and the presentation of the young people living there, as the topic of my masterwork. They also think positively about these living spaces and it is not the shortcomings or the ideological background of construction that comes to their minds first.
thesis
A conteporary view on the visuality of housing estates
What is their role in photography?
In my thesis, I explore the history, judgement and rehabilitation of housing estates and their representation through photography. We currently use several definitions of what a housing estate is, and these have changed several times over the past decades. The reason for this is that housing estates can be viewed from both architectural and sociological perspectives, and such multiple approaches require multiple interpretations. By analysing and comparing the work of Hungarian and international, and within them European, artists, I would like to present a new aspect of housing estates.
