The role of design and sustainability in the modern alternatives of final disposition
My thesis explores the topic of modern alternatives of final deposition procedures and customs in response to global warming. My hypothesis was that there was a “simple” but justified reason for any change in our funeral customs; and the next factor is the climate crisis. I first conducted a historical review to understand the causal relationship between cremation burial, now called traditional, and its primary alternative. Next I examined its adverse effects on the environment through scientific articles and studies. In the second half of my thesis, I present five contemporary examples that have already embarked on some form of realisation (such as Recompose, Resomation), in which design (Capsula Mundi, Living Cocoon) played an important role or at least represent innovation in the technological area (Promession). Finally, I studied people’s attitudes toward these alternatives in the form of a questionnaire and then drew the conclusion that my hypothesis was correct.
