The meaning of festive tableware once and now
In my research, I was looking for answers to questions such as: how did the perception of ceremonial tableware differ in the past and how has the once prestigious tableware turned into a cherished treasure filled with memories? I compared the characteristics of a classic 18th-century China tableware and the opinion of a modern person related to it. I analysed the appearance of Alexandra Pavlovna's ceremonial set consisting of more than 60 pieces, which she received as a wedding present in 1799, and examined what the decorations symbolised. Then I conducted in-depth interviews with people of different ages. In particular, the issue of inheritance and stories related to the sets became a central topic during the discussion. An important question was, what criteria they would consider to choose the perfect tableware? I realised that the communicative characteristics of tableware have been reduced to the here and now, but that there is much more emotional content in the family tableware we have. They can represent the memory of your grandmother, the happy moments of a wedding or the memory of a loved person in your home.
