Relationship of form and function in the history of climbing holds
When looking at the holds of a climbing wall, as someone familiar with the sport, you can mostly not even think how to reach for the holds. As a designer, you start thinking, and certain questions may arise. Where has this shape come from? How can we figure out the function of an object just by looking at it? To design a certain object, we have to know its past, in order to help build its future. In my thesis, I explored the connection between form and function in the history of climbing walls. It was important for me to ask questions about the attitude and mindset of the famous designers on the market. The best way to do this was through a survey. The point of my thesis is not to present all the greatest achievements of climbing history, but to give a true and comprehensive picture of these tools, which enabled climbing to be distinguished from rock climbing, also to be included in the Olympic Games.
