Exploring the medium of the album cover through the work of Hipgnosis and Pink Floyd
Album cover design, primarily for commercial purposes, converged into cover art by the mid-1960s, with established or emerging artists of the era often exploiting the possibilities of the genre to express their artistic concepts. Hipgnosis was one of these aspirational companies specialising in cover design, and during the period of its operation from 1968 to 1983, the studio, by rejecting the utilitarian principles established by the music industry and reinforcing the artistic standards of album cover artists, brought the visual form to its heyday. In my thesis, I focus on the collaborations between the Hipgnosis studio and Pink Floyd, which enabled the development of the defining visual style of the 1970s. Through an analysis of Pink Floyd's Hipgnosis album covers, I will illustrate the studio's different working methods, which have influenced the image design methodology of our time.
