Lost in Translation – Truth and Interpretation
Through examining four contemporary European artworks I write about the state and nature of creating and of the large and powerful abyss between interpretation and reality. I write about Thomas Ruff’s Jpegs, András Cséfalvay’s In a World Without Facts Only Goodness Remains, Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin’s War Primer 2 and Tamás Kaszás’ On Mineral Fibers (Summer House Herbarium), all of which have an ambiguous quality and different takes on narrative, making them profound subjects for case study on the problematics of interpretation. I also touch upon concepts concerning the characteristics of the (photographic) artist's identity, role, attitude towards creation given the technical aspects of the photographic image as a tool of representation, artistic mission and responsibility in a societal and political sense.
