Speaking walls in Belfast
My thesis explores the mural painting of Northern Ireland, particularly in the capital Belfast, through different perspectives and aspects. Knowing the history of the country is essential to understand the local mural painting, as it is based on a long-standing conflict that is still active today. The conflicting identities, ideas and events of local communities are depicted in the form of mural paintings across most of Northern Ireland. The capital is a globally significant area in terms of mural painting, so the focus of my thesis is on mural painting in Belfast. My motivation for the subject is based on personal interest and experience, as I had the opportunity to experience Northern Irish mural painting personally over a few months. In my thesis I describe mural painting in Belfast in terms of its genre, its birth, life, death and its influence, and I supplement this with first-hand and personal experiences.
