Melancholy as an artistic attitude in the 21. century
In my thesis, I explore the diverse concept of melancholy and its multitude of definitions since the beginning of time. I seek to understand what form it takes in today’s culture as well as its viability in our world. A historical overview of the concept leads me to believe that melancholy has always been a definitive human condition in both culture and art. The question arises: is the creative process that gives birth to a so-called melancholic piece of art also inherently melancholic? I explore this question through the example of a contemporary artist, along with the possible benefits of such a creative process. Finally, I propose a new concept related to melancholy that could expand its meaning in the modern world: one that bears empathy, rather than individuality, at its core.
