Time travel to Újpalota - Features of residential architecture and way of life in Újpalota from the beginning to the present day
In the first part of the study I survey the birth and history of the Újpalota housing estate. Based primarily on the architectural aspects of the period from the 1970's to present days, I provide the description of local characteristical buildings, as well as the people's life-style peculiarities that have been perceptible in these particular living district. In this context, I touch on some of the basic principles of modern urban architecture and briefly outline the urbanisation and the critical housing situation in Budapest after World War II, together with the directives of relevant state-run public housing post-war policy. On-site implementation circumstances of the constructions, the spatial layout arrangements and the different types of buildings compared to those of the Kelenföld housing estate have also been highlighted. The contemporary residential living circumstances and the characteristics of layouts of the living units will also be briefly discussed. In attempt of looking for some verification of my field research findings, I have also conducted and assessed some interviews with tenants living in the area for decades. Finally - in regard of the Újpalota housing project designed by Ybl Award winning architect Tibor Tenke - I sum up as to what extent the original intentions and expectations have been realized and fulfilled.
