thesis
In my thesis, focusing on manuality, I examine the material culture of communities that have somehow “left” society, live or lived in communal closed groups. I assume that the creation of their interiors with their own hands is bound to augment manuality in their everyday life and shape a special material culture. I review the objects, furnitures and interiors of the communities I have studied, along with the aspirations and social changes resulting in the emergence of the given community. I also review the topic of the potential impact these communities may have had on furniture design or architecture.

In my thesis, I have been studying how modern handicrafts and hand processing can appear in contemporary furniture. My research was mostly focused on how mass-produced elements could be linked to different handwrought technologies, and how to create furniture in which some sort of symbiosis appears. My final year project is a collection of three objects, The Hybrids, which combine mass-produced elements with the typically manual technology of basketwork. The objects' frames were made of machine-processed perforated sheets and steel tubes, and the reed was weaved into these frames, a process that can only be carried out by hand.
