An Introduction to the Architecture of Detached Houses

From the Stylistic Differences of the 20th Century, Through Frank Lloyd Wright and the ‘Kádár Cube’, to the 21st Century

My thesis discusses the concept of the detached house itself, including its first appearance, its scale and layout, and what qualifies/qualified as a detached house. I describe the layout and construction in more detail through the most characteristic changes of different time periods. I also present these periods in general through their main architectural changes. I mention the opportunities offered by financial differences and political influence (if any) in the area of family homes. I delve into the needs of families and individuals, and explore what detached family houses were used for. Among other aspects, I consider the co-living of generations, the size and functional order of spaces within the house (e.g. order of importance), the use of the garden, additional construction in the garden etc. I discuss the vision and ideology of Frank Lloyd Wright, including his philosophy about detached family homes. I also explore the concept of the ‘Kádár Cube’, thus demonstrating the diversity of the 20th century. The end of my thesis describes the 21st century situation, and as a conclusion, I propose a concept for the ideal detached family house and what it could look like.
