Setting sail
My master's diploma presents an alternative for the recycling of sailcloth, accumulated around Lake Balaton, which is no longer suitable for sailing and is to be discarded, but can still be used for other purposes. The project aims to educate, and to raise awareness of the recycling of sailcloth and the potential of this material in Hungary. My masterwork is a family of lamps made of sailcloth for both indoor and outdoor use, which gives the material a new function by using its good properties.

The many lives of materials
The role and options of the reuse of waste in the design of commonly used objects
In my thesis I examine the role of various value-based recycling and reuse practices in the design of commonly used objects, with a focus on upcycling and on recycling based on the model of circular economy. I also explore the role and responsibility of the product designer in the recycling process. After providing definitions for the key concepts and an overview of the history of reuse, I analyse several recycling projects and conduct interviews with Hungarian brands using upcycling and circular economy models in their production process. Finally, based on my research results, I outline a set of criteria that can support the design of ideal, value-based recycled products. I also discuss the role of recycling in product design and the designer's role in the recycling process.
