ForeverNest children’s bed

The aim of my masterwork was to design and construct a multi-generational children's bed with a primary focus on extending the lifespan of children's furniture and making them flexibly adaptable to children’s needs as they grow and develop. Throughout the design phase, significant emphasis was placed on crafting a bed that is not only durable but can also transform and adapt to the child's evolving needs, from the first days into young adulthood. This approach transcends the mere functionality of furniture, transforming it into a vessel of cherished memories and emotions, making it more valuable and significant for the family. I hope that the design principles and methodologies developed through this research will contribute to the emergence of enduring and value-driven solutions in the children's furniture market.
thesis

Children’s furniture through the ages

Children go through various developmental stages, and children’s furniture cannot fully meet their changing needs. In my thesis I analyse three prominent pieces of children’s furniture from the period between 1950 and 1990, where the features meet the different needs of different age groups. The analyses help us understand the intentions in the design process – the ideas of the designer, as well as the pedagogical approach and attitudes towards children. The selected pieces are similar, and their comparison reveals what features designers consider relevant today. The thesis may help us understand the design principles of children’s furniture and provide information on the background of the design of currently available kids’ furniture.
