Újpest Resort Association

The Danube bank in Újpest has an industrial character, but there are remaining natural floodplains here that have been important venues for urban recreational activities like swimming in the river and rowing. After the change of regime, the former company resorts were sold to investors and the built infrastructure has gradually deteriorated. In my diploma project, I explore the Üdülő sor (“row of cabins”) and the former Tungsram beach in Újpest. As this part of the riverbank has lost some of its functions, the floodplain flora could grow undisturbed. However, it has become possible to develop the area in the future. In my plan, I develop an alternative land use that is adapted to the qualities of this floodplain area. The framework for the architectural programme is the fictional Resort Association. The association operates the existing boathouses and takes part in the management of this part of the riverbank. New functions (restaurants, camping, clubhouse) are established as the abandoned buildings are repurposed.

Urban floodplains

The significance of the transitional space between the river and the city

In my thesis, I describe the potential that lies in the remaining, mostly enclosed and underutilised floodplains as an alternative to urban built embankments. The areas that are regularly flooded may be considered as parts missing from the urban fabric. On the other hand, they can also be seen as enhancements, both for the people and for the environment. I examine the significance of urban floodplains from ecological, recreational and flood protection aspects, through Hungarian and international examples.
