TAG

“TAG” is primarily a stencil-book for the elderly, designed to bridge communication gaps between generations. “TAG” emphasises the importance of connection and team-building, while also reflecting on leaving a mark, a technique well known in the graffiti subculture. The sample book is a way to represent personal stories that will be preserved for posterity as visual memories on a variety of surfaces. The playfulness of the sample book has a positive impact on the mental health of older people, and “TAG” opens up new perspectives in leisure and artistic activities developed for the older generation.

Perspective and visuality

The potential of graffiti to convey social messages

I explore the common subsets of the graffiti subculture and activities for the elderly to envision a useful and much-needed creative product that relies on exercises in style from modern graphic design. The aim of my thesis is to examine the potential outcomes of a collaboration between these two seemingly totally different concepts. Studying the graffiti subculture and society’s attitudes towards it, I focused on problem solving as I analysed the characteristics of graffiti from a different perspective. Starting from the historical and social background of street art, I examined the driving forces behind graffiti as an act of creation and considered the possibilities of incorporating it into art therapy.
