My Good Boy

My diploma project is an animated short film 6 minutes long. My good boy talks about the ambiguous relationship between a middle aged woman, her dog and her partner. The story takes place over a day and begins with a woman trying to push her obese pet, unable to walk, from the corridor of her apartment till the living room. The tender moments between them are interrupted by the arrival of the woman’s partner, who, in spite of his shyness, is not afraid to show his disdain for the dog. The tension between the characters increases along with the man’s jealousy, which eventually will lead to a final confrontation.

Middle aged people in popular culture and movies

What it means to be middle aged and how the representation of adulthood changes over time, especially in the film industry of Western culture

My thesis analyses the representation of the 45-64 age group, the so-called midlife, in mass media and in films in particular. It is based on the hypothesis that midlife is the most neglected period in life, which makes it especially prone to stereotypes and prejudice. The study pays special attention to public perception and its changes over the past decades, which are also reflected in the portrayal of middle-aged people in magazines, films and books. Instead of exploring various roles typically played by middle-aged actors, which often corresponds to the existential crisis of men and housewives, I selected films that, I believe, provide a broader overview of middle-aged roles. It is essential that we understand these portrayals if we want to dismantle stereotypes and add value to this stage in life, which is too often seen as a transitional period.
