Missing Parts

My masterwork is a 13-minute animated short science fiction/horror film. The story is set in a fictional ancient civilisation where human sacrifice is widely used to please the gods. The protagonist, Ashkii, a warrior in his prime, has a different fate, though, he survives the sacrificial ceremony. But this is when his real suffering starts when he regains consciousness in a secret, underground place and tries to escape. This is a serious challenge, both physically and mentally, and as he moves on in this environment, it gradually becomes clear for him that his own culture is based on lies.

The possibilities of the horror genre in animated films

In my thesis, my aim is to explore whether it is possible to establish a well-functioning connection between the horror genre and the medium of animated films. By defining the horror genre and listing its most common stylistic elements, I create a comprehensive set of criteria for horror, which I apply to existing animated horror films to see if they are effectively used in the selected films. In my research I primarily focus on feature films, and, in particular, on Japanese and North American animated films and I provide a comprehensive picture of the significant cultural and stylistic differences between the two camps. In my thesis I outline the factors that prevent animated horror films from becoming successful, and I present examples as I try to provide solutions for these issues.
