MOME DEPO

The project explores whether the physical products of the intellectual adventures we have at the university need to be preserved. Every semester, there are a number of experiments and objects created that are not only useful, but also capture a period. In addition to collecting and organising the pieces it considers valuable, MOME DEPO provides an urban presence that allows the university to communicate the work it is doing on its campus in Zugligeti Street to the outside world more efficiently. For this purpose, the petrol station and parking garage in Szabó Ervin Square (1996, BUVÁTI) seemed suitable. In addition to storage and exhibitions, the location led to the creation of the third prong of the programme, which is called LIFE and OFFICE. This function aims to evoke and, at the same time, relieve the calm community spaces of the Szabó Ervin Library, which are for studying and working.
thesis

The end of walking

The development of the car-friendly urban fabric, its criticism, and reform strategies in District 8

In the first part of my thesis, I explore the evolution of car-friendly cities and the criticism they have drawn. I present the examples of Paris and Berlin, and also New York, as the reforms implemented there have had a considerable impact on several American and European cities. I address the key moments of opposition, mentioning the works of Jane Jacobs, Marshall Berman and Gabriel Dupuy. This historical overview is followed by a case study in the second part of my thesis, on the pedestrian-friendly strategies implemented in District 8. I use in-depth interviews to present the background processes of the transformation of the district and the urban significance of public space. Finally, I describe the stages in which Bacsó Béla street became car free, and the lessons that can be learnt from this process. However, not every tactical urbanist attempt is successful in the district and these initiatives do not guarantee that urban spaces will be liveable in the long term.
