One day
Time never stands still and change is constant. My artwork aims to show transience, life and change through the symbolism inherent in dried flowers and crystals. The background image created from dried leaves symbolises permanence, while the brooches placed on it symbolise the changes in human life. Brooches keep changing as they are worn, the crystals slowly wear off, the petals start to crumble, the original colours age. Time and change are constant, but the events of the journey of human life and the body in which we live are different for everyone.

Mourning and death in jewellery design
The art of preserving and letting go
My master’s project started as a material experiment, and during my research I realised that plants and flowers do not lose their charm when they wilt, when they die. Wilting is a natural part of their existence, and it is unavoidable for every flower; however, if we look carefully, we can find the beauty in this, too. This train of thought led me to explore, in my thesis, how grief and death may be expressed and processed through jewellery, from traditional mourning jewellery to contemporary ephemeral jewellery. I seek to answer questions such as: How did mourning jewellery – the pieces we think of when we hear this word – evolve? What was the purpose of mourning jewellery? What happened to these sophisticated pieces over the course of history? How have the artistic and social attitudes towards death changed?
