Bosnyák Square Market Hall
Bosnyák Square and its surroundings are being transformed, but these developments do not benefit the local residents and the market. The adjacent property development projects have resulted in a contrast in the streetscape, which is a threat to the market and the market hall, as several plans recommend that it should be pulled down. In my diploma project I build on the values of the building constructed in 1961 according to plans by Gyula Kéri (BUVÁTI), and my aim is to introduce currently missing community functions here and bring the market hall up to contemporary standards with technological developments.

Urban life and market functions
The transformation of market halls in the 21st century
The aim of my master’s project is to examine the evolution of markets, their urban planning aspects, their place in and impact on society, and to explore the history of market architecture in Budapest, its architectural heritage today and the condition and utilisation of these buildings. In my research I found that in addition to better-known, downtown market halls built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, there are a number of buildings only local residents visit, and that most market buildings were constructed in the years around 2000. My conclusion is that while there are high quality markets built today and there are renovation projects, there are very few examples of the role of markets being reinvented, which means their basic function is slowly but surely becoming empty in many places.
