Garden under the city

My masterwork is an indoor, residential hydroponic plant growing system, which offers an innovative opportunity for people living in an urban environment and responds to current challenges by redefining home gardening. My goal is to create a opportunity for people with no access to a garden to grow quality and fresh plants, which contributes to increasing self-sufficiency and creating a sustainable lifestyle. The hydroponic trays are integrated into a variable shelf system, which enables the cultivation of herbs, lettuce or even strawberries in any dark corner of an apartment.

Opportunities to create community gardens in an urban setting

In my thesis, I research how community gardens can be created, maintained and managed in now unused urban areas. Through Hungarian and international examples, I examine and present the various types of community gardens and the technologies used in them. I present the concept plan of a community basement garden in Budapest with hydroponic plant growing units. I believe that indoor, hydroponic gardens are promising opportunities for residential communities, both for utilising space and for producing food. As people are not familiar with the tools and lack the knowledge to use them, I believe it would be best if the creation of hydroponic community gardens was provided as a service, and education, pest prevention and a careful selection of plants are essential.
