Sandbox

Sandbox is an indoor house designed for the needs of dwarf rabbits. My goal was to create an easy-to-clean home that offers more freedom and larger living space than traditional cages, provides shelter for its inhabitants and offers a solution to the problems of those who keep animals in small apartments. In most households with rabbits, rabbits are allowed to roam freely around the house when their humans are home, and they are only locked up when left alone. Sandbox is an ideal rabbit house for two rabbits, where they can dig freely, and which can only be closed by increasing its floor area.

A new role for pets

Rabbits as house pets

I have conducted research and developed guidelines to promote pet keeping in an optimal environment so that it can be an enriching and fulfilling experience for both pet owners and pets. In my research I explored the history of keeping pets, the factors that have a role in the domestication of certain species, and the ideal environment and conditions for keeping animals in your home. I learned what innovative tools and objects product designers can create to make pet keeping easier and more enjoyable. I analysed the ethical questions of pet keeping as a hobby, the potential future trends of keeping animals in light of technological and social developments, and I examined how we can be responsible pet owners in a world where the quality of the relationship between animals and humans is also valued. As a conclusion of my thesis, I created a guide for keeping rabbits, as the related infrastructure is much less developed than what their growing popularity and special needs would require.
