Thetos

The island of tranquillity

Thetos - The Island of Calm is an interactive multimedia installation that explores the frontiers of technology, dreams and consciousness. At the heart of the artwork is a dysfunctional "sleep chamber" where a dot-matrix printer continuously produces incomplete bedtime stories generated from the recurring motifs in my dream journal, also using artificial intelligence. The journal itself served as a starting point, and eventually the act of writing itself became an experiment as the practice began to influence my dreams. The aim of the installation is to examine the co-evolution of technology and human consciousness, the blurring of the boundaries between dreams and digital reality, to question the originality and authenticity of narratives created by artificial intelligence, and to explore how personal experiences can be transformed through algorithmic systems.

The visual representation of dreams

The role of the subconscious in art

In my thesis, I explore the various visual representations of dreams through examples from the most influential works dealing with dreams in fine arts and cinema. I look for recurring motifs, trends and the signs of changing attitudes towards the subconscious. My observations led to the conclusion that in addition to the fact that the visual representation of dreams is an integral part of human culture, there are also creative choices and archetypes that are consistently present in fine arts and in cinema. My research describes a timeline which begins when mythological meaning was attributed to dreams and leads to the point where artificial intelligence can be used to create, in mere seconds, a depiction of the mystical phenomena we experience while asleep. I also point to the depiction of dreams using artificial intelligence as an area for further research.
