masterwork
Memorial Book Archive Rizome
Memories are recorded in books; an archive is created from books; the archive becomes a rhizomatic network of knowledge. The masterwork reflects on the synonymy of the titular concepts through a book object. Its content is a bibliography and a collection of quotes taken from the small but rich literature of books on books, along with reflections, dictionary entries and notes pages. However, these do not have a predetermined order: they are put in an archival box without binding. This way, it is up to the „reader” to establish connections in the visual content. It is their task to organise and reconstruct the memories carried by the object – in this case, the memories of the history and the future of book culture – but this concept is just as applicable to the memories of any human being.

“Designing memories”
The interactions between visual perception and memory
The cognitive process of visual perception is the same for most of us, but the resulting perceptions differ, as they are affected by other brain functions as well. Such influencing factors include our memory, in which we store information for personal, social and general problem-solving purposes. How we process new information depends greatly on our existing memories that, unconsciously, control this process. As a result, we unintentionally ignore aspects that at first don’t seem to be consistent with our self, and with that we limit our knowledge, and, on a social level, our collective knowledge. Memory, however, can be shaped, as it is inherently constructive, and by using its connection to perception, we may be able to modify it with visual techniques. A relevant medium for this is books, which reflect on the interactions between visual perception an memory from historical, formal and functional aspects.
