Small Steps

Despite increasing awareness, there are still many prejudices and misunderstandings about Autism Spectrum Disorder. My diploma project is an interactive video game demo that depicts the daily challenges and experiences of an autistic character, whose persona is based on qualitative research. The aim of this project is to educate neurotypical people about autism and, by allowing them to experience life from the character's perspective, foster greater understanding and empathy towards autistic people.

Individualism in the Digital Age

Work, Productivity and Self-Tracking

In recent years there have been significant shifts in how the younger generation perceives work and productivity, but the underlying cultural and economic factors shaping these perceptions are often not self-evident. This thesis argues that to prevail in today's capitalistic culture, people need to optimize themselves and engage in activities such as self-tracking. This also means that people give up some of their privacy and become voluntarily monitored. I also assume that these activities further marginalize already oppressed groups. The first chapter explores how the working conditions have changed since the spread of capitalism and neoliberalism, and what effects it has had in Western cultures. The second chapter examines how the current labor market are connected to self-tracking applications and tracking devices that employers use, and the potential risks they conceal. The third chapter aims to incorporate alternative perspectives by analyzing the discussed phenomena through the writings of disabled authors.
