Uniqueness in mass production

My masterwork is mood lighting for home interiors. The lamp combines the advantages of mass production with the uniqueness of craft production. In my preliminary research, I explored the characteristics that make our objects feel unique, emphasising configurability and the contingent nature of material in my design. My work is workshop focused, I experiment with diverse applications of ceramic technologies. I have replaced the familiar glass shade with porcelain, the body is glazed ceramic and has a surface for the accessories we wear every day.

Uniqueness in mass production

What makes our objects feel unique?

In my thesis, I explore the relationship between mass products and unique objects. The goal of mass production is to meet the same needs of a large number of customers with the same product. But how can you find different paths with this kind of production? What makes an object feel unique whether it is created through mass production, limited series production or custom order? In my thesis, I seek to answer this question. To put the question into context, I provide a broad overview of the evolution of the Hungarian product design industry, then I present interviews I conducted with contemporary designers to get a picture of the current situation. In a competitor analysis, I describe how a multinational company tries to strengthen the connection between its mass products and its consumers. Finally, I present the potential paths to uniqueness I identified in a Venn diagram.
