masterwork
My good people, My God's People
Our memory is unique and unrepeatable. Every memory we have experienced is part of our identity, but sometimes our memories can lead us astray and can be distorted in many ways over time. In my masterwork I explore a personal subject: I reconstruct scenes from the history of my parents and our family that had a strong impact on my childhood. By processing my own memories and childhood experiences, I recreate and photograph these scenes. As our family was very different from the families of children my age, I was often put in absurd situations that still have a strong impact on me – they affect the way I relate to people, on my vision of life and thus on my whole personality. I consider it important that I should explore the different memory mechanisms and distortions within the family. I take pictures of situations and emotions that were not pictured at the time. In my creative process it is very important to bring out the details that are crucial for me, to recreate the atmosphere that I remember, which may no longer accurately represent reality.
thesis
Memory distortions and their role in visual arts
With my thesis, I lay the foundations for my master’s project with the research of subjective memory, the mechanisms of memory and the types of memory distortions in visual art through the analysis of photography and films. In my thesis I study the psychological background of memory, I analyse artwork focusing on this area, and I examine my personal memories and those of my family to explore this topic in my master’s project.
