Black-White

My masterwork is an associative, poetic, fictional short film about longing and the power of dreams. The two protagonists, a young couple bound together more by some melancholic habit than love, are about to return a videotape they rented long ago to the video store, following their respective inner journeys: the boy meticulously plans and then marks out the route on a map and in the space of the room, while the girl wants to get it over with as quickly as possible. But just like from the relationship, it is not easy to escape from the room with the growing net of thread.

Repetition and time structure in the film Last Year at Marienbad

In my thesis I analyse Alain Resnais’s 1961 film, Last Year at Marienbad, to identify the devices used to create the peculiar atmosphere of the film. I am especially interested in the visual representation of the inner journey, the effects of the circular nature of the narrative, and the significance of repetition in the time structure.
