Szilva and Baga

My masterwork is a paint-on-glass animated short film set in a fairytale world. It focuses on letting go, on acceptance and on moving on. The unconventional plot follows a little girl, Szilva, who is escaping into her dreams and Baga, the witch, who has been awake for hundreds of years. Here the witch does not eat the girl, but helps her grow up. The girl does not flee from the witch but carefully protects her life. The film presents the “good mother” and the child within us, and also our darker side, in a single, symbolic space, where you can make friends with “evil”, you can let go of what is not constructive any more, and you can admit when you must leave something behind for good.

The helping role of witches in female initiation tales

Exploring the influence of the witch archetype on our spiritual development

Generally we have a negative image of the witches of tales, yet they have a highly important, supportive role. My thesis explores this claim, with a focus on female initiation stories. From a structuralist and folklorist aspect, I rely on Propp’s work in my research. I explore the subconscious through Jung’s philosophy and through understanding archetypes. The definitions of initiation rites and initiation tales are followed by an analysis of the Russian folk tale Vasilisa. My research has revealed that in fairy tales the witch is indeed instrumental to the hero’s transformation. And she doesn’t even have to be good for this. Identifying with the evil inspires us to develop and encourages fairytale characters to change.
