Artist’s books as design objects
The evolution of the interpretation of artist’s books in the post-digital age
My hypothesis is that the concept of the artist’s book has transformed with the appearance of artist’s books that can also be seen as design objects. In my research I examine how the latest trends in artist’s books have diverged from conventions and I look for an analytical system that can help us understand the transformation of this kind of books. The thesis presents the interpretations of artist’s books in the context of related concepts (book art, book object, artwork) and in relation to the concept of design objects. The study adopts a contemporary approach to artist’s books, provides a short description of the post-digital age, and defines a conceptual network in the field of artist’s books and related concepts. Using the set of criteria defined for illustrating the changes, the thesis presents the analysis of three examples, one classical artist’s book and two contemporary artist’s books. The research also touches upon the relationship between visual arts and applied design and the relationship between art and mass trade.
