From burnout to breakthrough

Creating a path to personal fulfilment, wellbeing and resilience

My diploma project aims to tackle burnout by stimulating change digitally from individual and organisational perspective. Individual change is stimulated through a mobile application to prevent burnout by promoting self care practices, encouraging to understand our relationship to work and supporting to get help and overcome burnout and chronic stress in both the short and long term. An accompanying website educates on work-life balance and enables to advocate for better conditions at work. Finally, an organisational change is stimulated by a conceptual leadership game that stimulates new managers to create a more sustainable work culture.

Navigating burnout

Exploring Strategies to Combat Burnout and Cultivate Well-being through Digital Solutions

Burnout is aprevalent mental health issue which is hard to overcome without the right support. Often times slow living practices are the ones that help people to ground and balance their professional and personal lives. Digital mental health services have emerged and proved to be helpful especially when dealing with depression. The thesis will serve as research for a project in interaction design. It aims to get a foundation in understanding burnout, slow living practices and the role of digital services in mental health. To understand burnout, slow living and the types and role of digital mental health services a literature review was performed. I also interviewed a career coach and held a workshop with individuals who experienced burnout to get an understanding of the causes, potential solutions and coping mechanisms. After that I used benchmarking to compare three different mental health applications to better understand the role of digital services in mental health, their features and practices used. Important aspects to consider when developing a mental health application include accessibility, collaboration with mental health experts and using research-based practices to ensure the solution helps for the users.
