The film presents the Vojvodina of the 1970s and 1980s and the beginnings of the Yugoslav Wars through the lens of a collective of musicians who have been playing music together since childhood in various lineups. They rose to real fame in 1986 with their first studio album, which went platinum shortly after its release, but this album was musically very different from what they had played before. After the huge success of the band Sógor, numerous concerts and five studio albums, in 1991 Jenci Sógor stopped playing music, János Sógor was drafted into the Serbian army, and Ede Sógor fled to Hungary.

An ambivalent musical genre: the emergence of party folk music

From Rákóczi’s War of Independence to the Dáridó television show

My aim is to describe the history of Hungarian party folk, and in particular the ‘wedding rock’ revolution (also know as geranium music) in Vojvodina in the 1980s, which is the topic of my thesis. To be able to understand the popularity of this ambivalent musical genre, we must place it in the context of the Hungarian music scene and explore the historical backdrop against which this style and its precursors evolved, from 18th-century recruiting songs to the emergence of party folk and the television show Dáridó.
