PATEX

My diploma project is a product design experiment based on material research. As a designer my question was how I could use the nylon textile production waste generated in the hosiery industry so as to exploit the material's properties as much as possible. I placed the recycling of the material in the field of camping/hiking, where durable, lightweight products are very important. I have created an integrated camping set concept that can be used as tableware and a cup during a trip, as well as a tent lamp. The compact object reduces the space required for eating utensils and incorporates the functions of a cup, bowl, spoon and lamp in one object.

Textile waste in the circular economy

In my research I explore textile waste generated by the clothing industry. I focus on plastic polymer-based textiles and on pre-consumer waste generated in the production of nylon stockings in particular. The thesis presents experiments conducted with this nylon waste, during which its suitability for processing and its physical and mechanical properties were examined. My research has revealed that the most suitable processing method is extrusion followed by injection moulding. My goal is to create an example to follow and to inspire the evolution of a new industrial model in which production waste can be reused as secondary raw material.
