Narratives in Ceramic Art

Drawing on the relevant literature, my thesis reviews the art theoretical background of narrative representation. By virtue of its nature, this topic goes beyond ceramics, as theorists examining it have primarily focused on literature, film, and painting thus far. However, their findings are equally applicable to narrative representation in ceramic art. After reviewing and discussing the literature on narrative theory and storytelling, I enumerate the historical antecedents of narrative representation and ceramics. Storytelling and ceramics have been closely linked almost from the beginning. At the intersection of the two, an ancient human need meets an ancient craft. Finally, examining the relationship between contemporary art and storytelling, I attempt to assess the legitimacy and role of narrative representation by analysing salient works of ceramic art.
