Contemporary painter on a poster

The Kriszta Nagy phenomenon in light of the billboard “I am a contemporary painter”

'I am a contemporary painter' read Kriszta Nagy's billboard at Lövölde Square in 1998, which, in addition to the strong statement, showed the artist herself fulfilling all the expectations dictated by the visual language of mainstream lingerie advertising. The starting point for my thesis is the aforementioned billboard, which I approach from three main directions. Firstly, I examine the relationship between the public sphere and the artwork that is equally linked to the discourse of public art and the mainstream billboard culture. Afterwards I focus on the contradiction-filled feminist readings of the billboard. Eventually – in the respect of later remakes of the billboards – I deal with artistic self-representation and the image of the artist that is formed in parallel.
