The Socialist Legacy of Bathrooms
My thesis focuses on bathrooms and related ceramic accessories from the socialist era
which are still in use today, and which I researched and analysed during the past semester. The topic was extended multiple times in the course of my research with other subjects that I found exciting and relevant (social, psychological, historical, and functional subjects). The topic is important for me because it is closely related to my diploma project, which allowed me to design a ceramic bathroom set. I intended to prepare the design process with my research. First I was captivated by the bathroom ceramics themselves, then I combined that with my own experience and problem statement. I live in Kecskemét, in a 1970s residential apartment building called Szalagház. One of the most dated and utterly impractical areas of my home is the bathroom: a typical very old, tiny, socialist-style room. This architectural marvel, rather characteristic of the 1960s and 1970s, adorns a large number of populous residential buildings. That may well be, but the population of owners is aging. A generational turnover is taking place in these buildings. The elderly residents are being replaced by young people, for whom this tiny space is equally challenging. In the following chapters I am looking to find solutions to my questions on the subject.
