The Pull of Pattern - Changes in Patterns Over Time
My thesis showcases the evolution of patterns and ornamentation over the centuries, with a particular emphasis on the defining periods and forces that continue to influence the field of ornamentation and pattern design today. Patterns play an important role in material culture and object creation, including the areas of applied arts and design, but they are also connected to fine arts. They appear in all areas, from stained glass, through sculpture, to tiles, since patterns are nothing but lines and shapes forming a harmonious image. By analysing different artists and art movements, I intend to uncover why patterns are meaningful to us. Why do we insist on patterns adorning our clothing or our homes? And what determines whether a precious pattern will be timeless? What kind of future awaits textile patterns? What message do the patterns convey?
