Migrants Through the Lens of Media and Art

The refugee crisis is a persistent problem, brought to the Western consciousness by media channels that can influence public and private opinion. Images of overflowing rubber dinghies and large crowds of migrants in transit often appear on the front pages of newspapers, accompanied by headlines warning of the dangerous consequences of illegal immigration. This media coverage, often based on generalised figures and statistics, tends to desensitise the public to chaotic scenes at borders, alienating the target audience. The following study examines the example of the global migration crisis of 2015, and the phenomena and causal factors affecting migration. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the depiction of events in the media, including their technical presentation; and through these and artistic reflections, study the representation of the human being that is a part of the process: the 'survivor' of it. The analysis to be carried out seeks to recognise the portrayal of people through these media; to objectively explore which one makes the truth as clear as possible.
