Exploring the Visual World of Electronic Music Concerts
The Role and Rise of Light Technology
To understand the complex processes of contemporary concert lighting, I have conducted an in-depth research into what makes the quality and aesthetics of a production suitable, and what the role of the designer is in this process. I examine lighting processes in the context of electronic music concerts because the energetic atmosphere and multifaceted culture of the style is relevant and offers many opportunities to justify a visual extension (and consequently, lighting design). In order to understand the cause and effect chains, I first briefly review the history of lighting technology. This is followed by an overview of the equipment, where I conduct detailed research: from technologies that originated in the theatre, to modern lamp types. Following the technical and scientific research, I examine the principles that characterise today's concert lighting practices, and systematise them to provide a comprehensive overview of the key points of a quality production. Here, I discuss the role of collaboration and communication, as well as the role of media content, the manipulation of space, and the relationship between music and light, among other aspects. After an exploration of the fundamentals, I take a deeper look at the role of design. In this part of the thesis, I seek to understand what methods should be used to achieve quality production and how the role of the designer has changed in the field. Finally, I present a case study to demonstrate how the information I have obtained translates into practice, then summarise the conclusions and answer the hypothesis.
