The Psychology of Liminal Space in Video Games

The thesis first introduces the concept and aesthetics of liminality through the studies of Victor W. Turner and Arnold van Gennep. It then discusses the first widespread example of liminal space, and the research of two psychologists who have identified the variables that make a space liminal. The third chapter discusses the psychological meaning of the concept, illustrated with numerous examples. The next chapter discusses the world of video games, including the results of various studies on why people play. The final chapter uses a specific example, the game series Silent Hill, to describe the psychology of space in video games and liminal spaces in psychological terms.
