The Visual Representation of Lesbian Identity in Comic Books
In my thesis I would like to explore the visual representation of lesbian identity and sexual orientation through the example of comic books. I argue that comic books are best suited for the visual depiction and representation of the fluidity of lesbianism, as they are a medium that is as multifaceted and malleable as sexual identity, and can be read, interpreted, and approached from various angles. I would like to explore this hypothesis through two widely published and renowned comic books (Fun Home, Skim) and two smaller volume zine excerpts and comics (Flirt, Birdwatching). After presenting and analysing the comics, I examine the common denominators and differences, as well as the visual language used to represent lesbianism. I compare the styles of the texts and any links between the visual worlds, and consider to what extent they are abstract and open to interpretation, or whether they follow a pattern. I conclude the thesis by emphasising the importance of the subject itself, detailing why it needs to appear here and in this fashion, and how the hypothesis held up.
