Isekai is a popular genre of Japanese animation whose upward trajectory is unbroken. As a result, there is an enormous amount of content that follows the same pattern. Using the available literature on the subject, I will review the origins and main messages of the genre, its central cinematic motifs, and the audience demands that it fulfills, thus understanding the reasons behind the popularity of isekai.
