The operation of the Inconnu Group

Politics and Art

In my research, I examine the cultural policy of the period before the regime change and the relationship between political expression, political statements and art, through the activities of the Inconnu art group. First I describe the history and legacy of the Inconnu Group and I examine the relationship between political expression, political statements and art. In my research I also discuss the cultural policy of the period before the regime change and what life was like in Hungary during the communist era. I focus on the radical, anti-establishment acts of the Inconnu group, exploring how they drifted away from art and why they became increasingly political. I examine if this shift was inevitable. To this end I describe Peter Bürger’s theory on the Avant-garde and present some examples to show its explanatory power. Then I discuss the relationship between the Inconnu group and the Avant-garde, focusing on the works of the artists who had the greatest influence on the group. I conclude my thesis by an examination of the consequences of the change of regime on Hungarian society and on the Inconnu Group.
