The Cultural Significance of Collage and Montage
My thesis explores the cultural significance of collage and montage. I analyse the turning points that made the theory and technique of collage and montage possible. I discuss the evolution of photography, film, and printing technologies, and the cultural impact of mechanical reproduction. I address the significance of Modernism and the Avant-garde movements at a theoretical level, and examine the Postmodern characteristics of the genre - eclecticism, intertextuality, and juxtaposition rather than hierarchy. I examine the contemporary presence of the genre through the shifts brought about by digitalisation, the Internet and generative AI. I am interested in the collage technique as a means of cultural depiction that is accessible to everyone, especially in our current oversaturated visual culture. I aim to gain a better understanding of the collage and montage techniques in a broader cultural context.
