Ancient Greek tradition in the sculptures of Ferenc Medgyessy and Botond Polgár

How the ideas and forms of archaic and classical Greek sculpture are represented in and integrated into the art of Ferenc Medgyessy and Botond Polgár

In my thesis, I explore the relationship of Ferenc Medgyessy, one of the most significant sculptors between World War 1 and 2, to ancient Greek sculpture. His inspirations, the way the material is shaped and the physical characteristics of the completed works all reveal the influence of ancient Greek art. My aim is to understand how the artist drew on Greek features in the ideals and the shaping of his pieces, and how his medical background is connected to art and the human body. In parallel, I analyse the contemporary sculptor Botond Polgár’s selected works that were inspired by classical Greek sculptures. The ideological cornerstones and materials of his artwork are torsos, marble pieces and classicising works. Why do both artists have a longing for antiquity? How did they integrate it into their culture? What considerations did they have? To what extent was this intentional? How is the approach of sculpture at the turn of the century different from that of contemporary sculpture? I seek to answer these questions in my thesis.
