The Social Psychology of Creativity

The Role of Social Interactions and Collaborations in Design

The restrictions caused by the coronavirus have significantly reduced social interaction and human contact. As elsewhere, this state of isolation has caused significant challenges, loneliness, disadvantages, and uncertainty in our art university and in design as a whole. It was this situation that inspired my thesis. I wondered whether creative designers can be examined independently of their social environment, and if not, what social aspects and influences can be used to analyse their activity. The study of creativity is extremely complex and much of the literature focuses on creativity as an individual activity and individual genius. My thesis, however, is concerned with the aspects of creativity that take place in a social context, and examines these processes from a community perspective. On a small scale, my thesis mainly focuses on the more intimate social environment that surrounds and supports us every day. I explore how individuals behave during planning and design activities in the company of others, and how one is influenced by their implicit or explicit presence, including direct or indirect interactions and feedback. How these phenomena influence motivation and inspiration, and overall: creativity. Finally, I emphasise cooperation: its benefits, challenges, and possible solutions.
