Plant Spray Workshop
Revitalisation of the SZOT restaurant in Badacsony
The building of the former SZOT (National Council of Trade Union) restaurant in Badacsony is one of the products of Tibor Farkas's regional sraft design for Lake Balaton. However, unlike its contemporaries, this building has been significantly marginalised in spite of its architectural value and the potential of the area. In my masterwork, I aim to reintegrate the building and its surroundings into the region through an experimental programme that takes into account and works with the natural features of the site. The herbs grown in the garden can be fermented to produce natural plant conditioning sprays through fermentation processes, which can be beneficial for the grape-growing region. I have adjusted the existing conditions to accommodate the spatial requirements of the processing mechanism. The grape pomace obtained from growers is an excellent compost material. The local recycling of plants is a key element for long-term sustainable plant cultivation. The programme is completed by a small-scale accommodation facility for hikers on the Blue Trail (Kéktúra), serving as a stopover for multi-day hikes.

At Home in the Landscape
The landscape evolution of Badacsony Mountain through its relationship with people, from the basalt quarry to the present day
In the wine-growing region of Badacsony Mountain, the opening of a basalt quarry in the early 20th century created a duality in the settlement. In contrast to the centuries-old tradition of viticulture, the new activity had a fundamentally different approach to the principles of coexisting with nature. After the closure of the quarry, the duality persisted: the peculiarities of lifestyles from different eras shaped the community and the mountainous landscape. In the historical overview, I primarily trace the landscape evolution of the Badacsony Mountain through personal interviews, focusing on the relationship between the communities and their natural environment. I contextualise the building of the SZOT (National Council of Trade Union) restaurant in Badacsony, which forms the basis of my masterwork. Having explored the current social and environmental context, my programme proposal aims to connect with the permanence of vineyard cultivation instead of focusing on the ever changing functions due to the culture of duality. I aim to reintegrate the area of the SZOT restaurant by establishing a phytotherapy garden that connects with the region's inherent values and natural processes. By producing natural plant conditioner sprays, the herbal plantation functions as a puzzle piece within the vineyard environment. In turn, grape pomace serves as a valuable compost material for the plantation. The local recycling of plant produce from our immediate environment is an important aspect of long-term sustainable cultivation.
