Behind the Scenes

A person has many different facets. What do we want to present outwardly, and what do others see within us? Through what filters do we perceive each other? What misunderstandings can arise in a relationship due to different perspectives? How can the visual effect, created by the changing and blending of colors, express the stage between getting to know each other and understanding one another? Working with the play Bluebeard's Castle, I explore the relationship between the Prince and Judith through the medium of color. I examine what the Prince wants to project about himself, what Judith seeks in him, and what the receiver experiences from the combination of the two.

thesis

Colour, character, effect

The goal of my thesis is to gain a deep understanding of the principles of colour theory. I aim to consciously apply this knowledge as a costume designer, in order to depict the nature and development of different characters on a wide spectrum, as needed by dramaturgy. I study the role of colour in creating the image of fictional characters. I present the effect colours have and the mechanics of how they work. I examine the links between character attributes and the use of colour. I look into the various connotations that colours carry in different cultures. Based on the relevant literature, I contrast the big five personality traits with the application of colour. Finally, within the framework of an empirical research study, I analyse how the interaction between colours result in changes in the content of people’s associations.
